Westward (Deb and Mike Harding, Lisa Dohig and Ken Kowalchuk) have been involved in playing folk music in Taranaki since Ken and Lisa arrived in New Plymouth following a spell in Ohura (teaching, not incarcerating!). Young families and involvement in the local folk club and festivals saw friendship grow over much shared music and many good times.
Westward comprises four strong vocalists plus guitar, bass and songs to entertain and bring an audience together ‘in unison and harmony’. Songs from near and faraway places and times, from the western highways of Ireland and Glasgow streets, Te Reo to a Te Awamutu celebration, from a Mississippi summer to an Alabama hollow, from British traditional ballads to modern folk anthems. Songs of intrigue and inspiration, solace and celebration. To quote again from songs in their current repertoire, ‘Let the music speak for itself’ and ‘You’ve got to do it while you can’.
